<br />
I love clocks, and for some reason and really happy when I have a whole bunch hanging in the same place. My daughter Samantha is an enabler and not only encouraged me to buy these, but arranged them close to the door of the studio.<br />

<br />
The working wall is in progress. Since I'm still in the design stages of my next quilt, I decided to hang some quilts for now. I'll also be hanging quilts outside the studio, but the walls are being painted now, so I have to wait a bit. We're making progress!<br />

I'm moving from #216 to #305 around the first of August. My daughter, Samantha, is going to decorate the space, and we're both designing it.<br />
<br />
Here are some pictures of the space before we start.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7kxqotaT-ufU6d72gZRZo2SsgnDrQuZNGM5-HyaDl8Pp-EzeYI3qpn6V-aAsEkFY3rXP-jtU47xQVdIgzTsZDmkyGaJTWpQNYUwlI8ILrK70IY77lVa9IDYGYsgq3QWAsciBKfJOgFF_V/s1600/IMG_2609.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7kxqotaT-ufU6d72gZRZo2SsgnDrQuZNGM5-HyaDl8Pp-EzeYI3qpn6V-aAsEkFY3rXP-jtU47xQVdIgzTsZDmkyGaJTWpQNYUwlI8ILrK70IY77lVa9IDYGYsgq3QWAsciBKfJOgFF_V/s320/IMG_2609.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
The doorway. Look to the right of that lovely double door. That's space for me to hang quilts. Look to the left of the door, the wall that has the chairs is also space to hang quilts. I don't know whose chairs those are.<br />
<br />
Sam has some interesting ideas for the windows in the door. The idea is to give visitors a glimpse into the room, but I don't want to feel like I'm at the zoo.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is the wall to the left of the door, as you look in. See that sink? It's really wide. The bowl is on the left, and the drain is on the right. The drain is 48" long, sloping towards the bowl. You know what this means? Fabric dyeing right in a sink. Ice dyeing. The ice can melt right into the sink! And rinsing. I can use the sprayer to quickly rinse the fabric without the dye falling back on the fabric. One negative is that the hot water is not piped to this sink.<br />
<br />
<br />
To the right, you see another sink, and that one has hot water. I can switch the faucets and MAYBE get hot water piped over to the wide sink, I'll have to figure it out. You may also take note of the cabinets, which have doors in less than perfect shape. The upper doors are ok, the bottom, not so much. Ikea has inexpensive doors ($7) and hinges that I think I can use to replace them. My plan is to store dye supplies and tools, as well as other surface design materials in the cabinets on the bottom. Not sure what goes on top, as I can't really reach them anyway.<br />

Here is the back wall of the studio, when you look in the door. It's brick. and it's very high. I plan to use this part of the wall to display quilts. I'll be fabricating some sort of hanging system so that no nails are put in the brick wall. I will be attaching something to the joists that will allow me to show quilts and change them frequently. I will also want to have safe storage for quilts, to keep them from deteriorating.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Looking North towards the window along the nice long walls. On the left, we'll have materials storage, fabric, books, perhaps sewing cabinets. On the right, close to the window, my longarm. See those brown tiles on the wall at the right? They are gone, I'll be putting my working wall up there. It will be made from Designer Tack bulletin boards, covered with batting and cloth. That section is 15 feet long.<br />
<br />
The floor at the back 30 feet of the studio is really crappy. It's the old wood factory floor. It's a bit rough, and has places for pencils and things to fall between the boards. (they won't fall down to the second floor, there is a floor beneath it) I will cover some of it with the rugs I have, but I'm looking for a solution for the space, which is about 15x30 feet. It needs to be something I can easily remove without damaging that floor further, and inexpensive. The floor in the foreground is fine, it just needs to be cleaned.<br />
<br />

It was a white patio table, in good shape, cute, but sorta boring on top. Sam painted it, then created stencils and painted it again. I'm very impressed by her stencil skills, as well as the composition. Isn't this marvelous?<br />
<br />
Stay tuned! More is coming!<br />

Broadly speaking, a Jew is one who associates culturally with Jews, supports Jewish institutions, reads Jewish books and periodicals, attends Jewish movies and theater, travels to Israel, visits historical synagogues, and so forth. It is a definition that applies to Jewish culture in general, and to Ashkenazi Yiddishkeit in particular."</span></div>

Mine isn't.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijwFvy2hDnXAxdKs6tf0t92xno26Za0B1jEQuqmVvr2z_zZJj6DfU-8_vrYZxJapKURcnlHVK13-eoPCQlkuuKsDDv-FPo-hdSlB7aSgZMkIlzukh5dpYH1Mtjpjup4wTSNU6d5Ri0CZ8d/s1600/IMG_1592.JPG.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijwFvy2hDnXAxdKs6tf0t92xno26Za0B1jEQuqmVvr2z_zZJj6DfU-8_vrYZxJapKURcnlHVK13-eoPCQlkuuKsDDv-FPo-hdSlB7aSgZMkIlzukh5dpYH1Mtjpjup4wTSNU6d5Ri0CZ8d/s640/IMG_1592.JPG.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a shot of the studio in the afternoon. Those windows are on the west wall, and direct light doesn't really pour in until late in the afternoon. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The studio is 15x30', so I have my APQS Millie set up at the west end, by the windows. I had Dave Jones, who has been an APQS dealer for years move it from my house in Third Lake, to my studio in the Hot Shops, in Omaha. He took it apart, trailered it to Omaha, set it up again and serviced it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Dave suggested I buy an Uninterupted power supply, to condition the power to the longarm. I got one for about $70, and I'm discovering it is well worth it. I haven't had a power outtage, but I need it for the smooth power it delivers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The other day, I was listening to an Audible book, using bluetooth and an inexpensive bluetooth sound bar. The sound kept cutting in and out. I thought it was the phone, but when I moved the speaker and plugged it into the UPS, the sound stopped cutting in and out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The UPS is on the floor next to the Millie on the right. You can't see it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have two Iris Six Drawer storage units sitting behind the longarm, my collection of thread spools are distributed into the drawers. I need more. I want all my longarm thread and tools along that window wall, on the outside edges, so I can access everything while standing on the free motion side of the machine. So, most of the time, I'll be facing away from the window, with the light coming over my shoulder. There is an old radiator there, which may or may not give off enough heat, I'll see this winter! I usually run hot, so it might be fine. In any case, my Millie is happy to be out of my basement and in the sun. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The size of my studio is 15x30' and I'm on the second floor. There is a freight elevator, but you have to manually open and close the door. I can't reach the handle to close the door on the second floor, so I can go up, but not down, unless someone is around to close it for me. I tried using a pliers to grab the loop, but it slipped out of the handle (ikea) and it fell down the shaft. So, I try to take the stairs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So far, I have three folding banquet tables, 30x72" each. I'm going to add another, so I'll have room for 8 students to take free motion quilting classes on domestic machines. And also a dye class. And some fusing classes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzdDIByZhGfTjs244GGDGC-EAsu-oosUZNPc9uDigJJ4l2oxRF7k3XVsVWGa0ASgXMaQmdJ4GhhzZeuCw_mWSdAjJZ1hQB3cz-U1inMZbT4E1o_AWvb4EcY-u4zZ0no0VOOMRvxhkIK8gb/s1600/IMG_1593.JPG.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzdDIByZhGfTjs244GGDGC-EAsu-oosUZNPc9uDigJJ4l2oxRF7k3XVsVWGa0ASgXMaQmdJ4GhhzZeuCw_mWSdAjJZ1hQB3cz-U1inMZbT4E1o_AWvb4EcY-u4zZ0no0VOOMRvxhkIK8gb/s640/IMG_1593.JPG.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's what the studio looked like at the end of the day yesterday, standing at one corner behind the longarm. I just finished that quilt top that is right above the blue chair. It's pale in the picture, because you are seeing the back side of it, with the paper from the fusible still on. I will fuse the whole top to a piece of fabric to make a stable surface for quilting on the longarm. The quilt towards the right corner of that 16' long working wall has been in progress for a while. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I dye all my fabric, and use fusible applique to create the designs. Then I free motion quilt them on my longarm.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm teaching three days of fusing classes in Houston this year at Quilt Festival, the first two days are sold out! Space in the third day appears to be open. Each class will have several patterns to choose from, that aren't available anywhere but my workshops, and many new patterns will debut there!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'll be teaching at the Mid Atlantic Quilt Festival next February, and patterns will be there too!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I bought a used Bernina 770QE from a friend, I plan to fire that up tomorrow, I'm making a sign for the door of my studio. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thanks for visiting! Come up to Studio 216 if you are in Omaha at the Hot Shops Art Center! If I'm there, the door is open and you are welcome to come in, hang out and look at my quilts!</div>

It's a very interesting building and I'm really excited about it. The building houses something like 80 artists in 50 studios. I could be wrong on this number. I believe it was originally a mattress factory, which is appropriate for a quilter with a longarm.<br />
<br />
Right now, I'm a part time resident of Omaha, living in a loft at The Greenhouse, which is kitty corner to the Old Market.<br />
<br />
I keep discovering new things I like about Omaha, which is fun, because I've lived in Third Lake for almost 30 years now, in the Chicago area, for over 50 years. So, with the exception of the Cubs winning the world series, not many surprises.<br />
<br />
Anyway, this week was my first at the Hotshops and I spent Monday through Thursday getting some if it set up, and then Friday, working on a quilt.<br />
<br />
Here is some of my progress so far:<br />
<br />

Still a little disorganized and still not much in the space. But I have more to do.<br />
<br />
Please stop by if you are in the area, I won't be back for a few weeks, so message me at Robbi@robbieklow.com if you want to see my studio. Otherwise, the building is really interesting and worth a visit!<br />
<br />
I plan to eventually have my APQS Millennium here. I'm not planning to rent it out, or quilt for others at this time, but I do plan to offer free motion quilting classes in my space, either on the longarm, or on domestic machines. I have some ideas to offer during the College World Series of Baseball, which is a block away. And the HotShops are adjacent to several NEW hotels. So the area is getting more and more interesting. And we're a few blocks from downtown. And two blocks from the basketball arena! We saw Queen during our July trip to Omaha.<br />
<br />
I'll be here more and more this winter.<br />

<br />
Since this was a big award, and it was Florida, and February, I decided to go down there to see my quilt in the show. Normally I don't do that, but the prize was big enough to get on a plane, change into my sandals and attend the show for a few days.<br />
Brian came along, he was reluctant but I told him he could fish on Saturday.<br />
Here's a picture of me standing by my quilt:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigv-5L_IQVdza4MoxhhydoE01eQrIJH529eWQ_a8wMuECARj0sRgky3q5H6G5ggSjtzozN38iZkyf4ucLVDADr3Ug-fJA2xvcKadagwU68f7xGPDR44WXAHXeISKwB2knPEcezfjATZYKz/s1600/IMG_3161.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigv-5L_IQVdza4MoxhhydoE01eQrIJH529eWQ_a8wMuECARj0sRgky3q5H6G5ggSjtzozN38iZkyf4ucLVDADr3Ug-fJA2xvcKadagwU68f7xGPDR44WXAHXeISKwB2knPEcezfjATZYKz/s320/IMG_3161.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Shortly after that, I moved around the corner to look at someone else's quilt and two women walked by my quilt and one of them said something on the order of "you never know what the judges were thinking". Which I thought was hilarious (I think that quite often about other people's quilts, so I don't mind it at all when someone says it about mine. )Brian's eyebrows went up and I mouthed at him to be quiet and not say anything. <br /><br />
And then he had to spend Sunday with me, as the quilt show was closed. So we hung out on Daytona Beach during the day, and then at night, we tried to watch the Spacex rocket take off from Cape Canaveral. BUT they scrubbed it twice, the first time, because a boat had wandered into the verbotten space surrounding the launch and then a second time, because the delay caused by the boat allowed something to heat up. In the meantime, we kept running back and forth from our hotel room to the beach while I was checking the countdown on my iphone.<br />
<br />
Then we came home in time for a big snowstorm. Of course.<br />

<br />
I worked on it during Chicago Modern Guild retreat one year, and lost a section! There is supposed to be a band between the Greek Key section and those pointy petals. I made corrections to the work in progress before I realized the initial mistake. (I found the missing pieces and figured out what had happened.)<br />
<br />
Anyway, I kept working, declared the top finished and started quilting. Then I took it off my longarm in order to work on another project. I decided instead of continuing to quilt it as is, I'd fix the parts I wasn't happy with, and THEN, instead of quilting, I'm going to do some thread painting over some of the pieces. First I will mount the finished top on my longarm (APQS Millie) to do the thread painting. When I done/bored with that, I'd remount it with batting behind it, then quilt it. I truthfully don't think this will take much longer than quilting the life out of it in the first place, as the thread painted areas won't need quilting.<br />
<br />
Here's a picture of the top as it was this week, I was working on that gold band:<br />

<br />
It's About Time appeared on the cover of the October/November issue of Quilter's Newsletter Magazine. This was a big deal for me, a milestone. QNM was the first quilt magazine I read on a regular basis, and still my favorite for all things quilty, so being on the cover really meant a lot.<br />

Another quilt, Kenophobia, won a 3rd place award in the World Of Beauty contest in Houston last fall. My visit to the quilt show was cut short by the birth of my adorable grandson, Bennett John Kruse, but it was still really fun to be at the show for a few days. <br />

<br />
So, that was an exciting year. And to start off this year, I'm going to Denver to teach a class at the new location of Myrna Ficken's store , <a href="http://www.aquilterschoice.com/" target="_blank">A Quilter's Choice</a>.<br />
<br />
Myrna is a fantastic AQPS dealer, and I was delighted when she asked if I would come visit and teach a free motion quilting class for her. The class will be on January 21, 2016. Students can either either a longarm in her shop, or a domestic machine. Here's a specific link to the class:<a href="http://www.aquilterschoice.com/events/event/14/10/" target="_blank"> Expressive Unmarked Free Motion Quilting</a><br />
<br />
<br />
Back in Chicago, I'll be teaching a fusing class for the <a href="http://psqg.org/?page_id=10" target="_blank">Prairie Star Quilter's Guild</a> on January 25, and giving two lectures. Contact <a href="mailto:joanne.sattler@gmail.com" target="_blank">Joanne Sattler for more info</a>.<br />
<br />
<br />
As soon as I get home, I'll be shipping two quilts to AQS for their new show in Florida, Kenophobia and Happy.<br />
<br />
So with that, have a Happy New Year and I hope I get to see you or a quilt of yours this year!<br />

It's a rotary
cutting ruler, with a handle for the rotary cutting blade built in. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Fabric & Quilt Ruler Cutter by Havel's" border="0" src="http://ep.yimg.com/ay/yhst-17745174073719/new-fabric-quilt-ruler-cutter-by-havel-s-27.jpg" height="386" hspace="0" title="" vspace="0" width="271" /><br />
<br /></div>
<br />
I like it very much. I'm left handed, so the samples you'll see might look backwards, but I wanted to show you why I like it.<br />
<br />
Although I have several Accuquilt strip dies, and love them, there are times when I want to use a rotary cutter and ruler.<br />
<br />
Normally,
when I cut strips for a quilt, I "clean" off the raw edge across the
width of the fabric, to set up for making strips that are perfectly
straight. This involves laying the fabric on my cutting mat, lining up
the ruler and making a small cut across the width of the fabric.<br />
<br />
There
are different ways of using rotary rulers, but I like to line up the
cut edge of the fabric with the marking on the ruler that matches the
strip width I want. In other words, the ruler is covering the fabric
that I want to cut off, and the main body of the fabric is uncovered.
This is the way I learned about 28 years ago, I can do it quickly.<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
I want to clean off the right edge of this piece of fabric before cutting strips.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMlLiPURBBuZNXyJCwbZD-6zajdTRVqOJ6PGnkyayrje-TL3Zd7QD7vfsJOixFuV6-fmvMr_A69eDUhIW65xoUaBBIhZyopnSF24GQxjJ01RDhMYK-jzMpac65qTPGBmOklBiv9kD7Mjpx/s1600/IMG_0244.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMlLiPURBBuZNXyJCwbZD-6zajdTRVqOJ6PGnkyayrje-TL3Zd7QD7vfsJOixFuV6-fmvMr_A69eDUhIW65xoUaBBIhZyopnSF24GQxjJ01RDhMYK-jzMpac65qTPGBmOklBiv9kD7Mjpx/s320/IMG_0244.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
In this picture, the main fabric is to the left, with the strip I
want to cut off just to the right edge of the cutter. This would be how a
right hander would use the ruler to clean off the edge. I can do this
too, because I don't have to HOLD the cutter, I can use my left hand to
stabilize the ruler, and then my right to push the cutter along that
metal edge.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJCcnJrXjqLayei1PqB-qOtVHeDHv4Lejvhj9uL3eI3FgNbfwwG7JNZ2q23MAOszGvjSP7cRCLxv2WVGedFFIZrEmNWwblsM9MnXjqxH51GQh7U6Qk51P0NJ4uLu4GUH9Ju9xT7GJaBjQQ/s1600/IMG_0250.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJCcnJrXjqLayei1PqB-qOtVHeDHv4Lejvhj9uL3eI3FgNbfwwG7JNZ2q23MAOszGvjSP7cRCLxv2WVGedFFIZrEmNWwblsM9MnXjqxH51GQh7U6Qk51P0NJ4uLu4GUH9Ju9xT7GJaBjQQ/s320/IMG_0250.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now I've cut the wobbly strip off, and I can proceed to cut the rest of my strips WITHOUT having to move the fabric. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjftb-CF-WhrTqh21QnVeqbh6pZf3gxGxXha1T8L8NP2hRWRcb09PU9S1-zVedWg0xAMmfGJoj1gtN_ewKcOyRNj12s5Cv2KdrEeA8hFwuQBLcOgfSSmG9pn-QwIyv7DZKNpu8zIYqE8-S2/s1600/IMG_0251.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjftb-CF-WhrTqh21QnVeqbh6pZf3gxGxXha1T8L8NP2hRWRcb09PU9S1-zVedWg0xAMmfGJoj1gtN_ewKcOyRNj12s5Cv2KdrEeA8hFwuQBLcOgfSSmG9pn-QwIyv7DZKNpu8zIYqE8-S2/s320/IMG_0251.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
To
cut the strips, I line up the edge of the fabric, here I'm using the 1
1/2" line, and run the blade up along the edge of the ruler. The ruler
is covering the 1 1/2" strip, making it stable while I cut. If you are
right handed, you would be using the opposite side.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8lcblwF0cvQ2Awi3Cplm6aBQKTouFroMj78C4wDxaKojVlynpU91PUL4oasuoynUqL3Oi6wk8NRmY9-BLLe8IL4RXA29NkEI__onQi-yy00LzzO20wuIRU9_gFjwng2vBYe5Z_jHd79bU/s1600/IMG_0252.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8lcblwF0cvQ2Awi3Cplm6aBQKTouFroMj78C4wDxaKojVlynpU91PUL4oasuoynUqL3Oi6wk8NRmY9-BLLe8IL4RXA29NkEI__onQi-yy00LzzO20wuIRU9_gFjwng2vBYe5Z_jHd79bU/s320/IMG_0252.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
And here we have the cut strip. To cut more, I line up the desired width with the line on the ruler, run the cutter up the metal strip and I've got another strip.<br />
<br />
You can do this with a regular rotary cutter and ruler, but you have to flip the fabric around between the cleaning off strip and the quilt strips. And you have to get some practice running the cutter along the edge of the ruler.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.havelssewing.com/fabric-cutter-with-rotary-blade-39019.html" target="_blank">Here's a link to the ruler if you are interested</a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And here's the quilt I made: Fancy Foxes, from Elizabeth Hartman's pattern. The strips were going to be the noses, but I switched it to black which made for a better quilt, but not such a good tute.</div>
<br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;">Screen printing the easy way.</span></div>
<br />
I really like these two gear shapes and I use them in some of my quilts.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3igIu3C9sVPglaXGdAfzYh3KT43gl4Wp5iw3RNKDF2mYFCYHEhJz6TNUPTnCMLBoUIqwvl9kscbkoNwd0bcta2_ch9Y9bghWP1XxuMGMKw_KT3eSe6JjoO91Cdt303MNbK2TrEww0aI4Z/s1600/gears.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="193" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3igIu3C9sVPglaXGdAfzYh3KT43gl4Wp5iw3RNKDF2mYFCYHEhJz6TNUPTnCMLBoUIqwvl9kscbkoNwd0bcta2_ch9Y9bghWP1XxuMGMKw_KT3eSe6JjoO91Cdt303MNbK2TrEww0aI4Z/s400/gears.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I am thinking of using them as my "vocabulary" to explore surface treatments, using them either as a stencil to paint through, or as a stencil to mark shapes on a quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have a screen printing kit from Stencil Pro. It makes pink stencils, with no chemicals. You print out the image for your stencil on transparency paper, lay it on top of the stencil paper, put it in the sun, count to 25, take it inside and soak it in water. That's your stencil. Pretty much.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you have a thermofax, that's quicker. I had to wait until it was sunny, and had to count to 25, which took concentration, as my neighbor came home. Had to wave at him. A car was parking on the other side of the street with blinky lights on it's hood, had to stare at the car for a bit in case the inhabitants were up to shenanigans. I still have no clue who they were. We live on a cul-de-sac in a suburb of Chicago, so normally people who park on your street and leave their hazard lights on are not strangers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbNYgr_fg-M6U5Dn_dx6rWQccC6uaDLY0jclqljBlYnvdvF3yZyLP7GLmWF8ZuSTNHsr54jbA0iG3_tFfv26NOz3YRBbDg7GmAWoSp2-QSfYy7qpjJFP1XcKFponkSTLWsfAWIjeOumoma/s1600/IMG_2346.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbNYgr_fg-M6U5Dn_dx6rWQccC6uaDLY0jclqljBlYnvdvF3yZyLP7GLmWF8ZuSTNHsr54jbA0iG3_tFfv26NOz3YRBbDg7GmAWoSp2-QSfYy7qpjJFP1XcKFponkSTLWsfAWIjeOumoma/s320/IMG_2346.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are the four stencils I ended up with. There was a learning curve, I wasted another four. and if I do these over, I won't have the boxes around the gear, just have the gear.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm going to pounce them with chalk to be a quilting guide. And put some fabric paint and paint through them, like a stencil. And I'm going to get my BERNINA to embroider them. And my cutting machines to cut them out. Maybe.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway, the amazing thing to me, is that this kit from Circuit Bridge was purchased in 2011, and the sheets are still just as active. It's me that wasn't using them....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a link to my crafts class if you want to see one way to use stencils for quilting. In the class, I use a 1" square grid stencil I bought at a quilt show, to mark a quilting grid.</div>

<br />
Here's a link to sign up for a giveaway, one winner will get the class for free.<br />
The class if Fearless FreeMotion Quilting. I'll show you how I use felt samples to make it easier to practice free motion quilting on my Bernina. It's a great way to get started if you haven't free motioned before. I've been using this method for years in my "bricks and mortar" classes. (or is that flesh and blood? I don't know...)<br />

Sorry.<br />
<br />
A quick note that there are still spaces in a five day workshop I'm doing with Quilting Adventures in Texas next month. There is still time for you to sign up.<br />
<br />
The workshop is officially to design my kind of quilts, but if you just want to hang out and make a quilt without having to design, that's fine too, I'm bringing a bunch of patterns.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.quilting-adventures.com/spring-quilting-seminars/session2/" target="_blank">Check it out here</a><br />
<br />
I promise to start updating my blog on a regular basis! (yeah, I know I say that all the time...)<br />
<br />
Here's a picture of a new quilt in the meantime:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8wX9ruy5PIgBe1iaa0-42IMmcQFfZLh1ZdmyXj4PFMNVA6r65zltWZVElihyx1ZrNr3iqyOBpTyJQp7CS9RnrTxKvIltzmnfEnMbdXx4SY5gBNyAaKSWScR56gnbRlf_x2yLhNtlkQlAX/s1600/Spirals.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8wX9ruy5PIgBe1iaa0-42IMmcQFfZLh1ZdmyXj4PFMNVA6r65zltWZVElihyx1ZrNr3iqyOBpTyJQp7CS9RnrTxKvIltzmnfEnMbdXx4SY5gBNyAaKSWScR56gnbRlf_x2yLhNtlkQlAX/s400/Spirals.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
This quilt is named "Spirals" (yes, I know that's very original). I used the Accuquilt Go! to cut most of the shapes. I designed a die for them, I used that for some of the parts, and then used other dies they have for other parts, and then I used my computer to design some of the OTHER parts.<br />
<br />I do have a pattern for this, and it's available in my classroom when I teach. So far, I'm not selling this separately, although I might do that in the future. You don't have to use any dies to make the quilt, all the shapes needed are included in my pattern and they can be traced and cut out by hand.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, this quilt is going to go to the Mid Atlantic Quilt Festival, with the Mancuso Brothers. I've taught there the last two years, and judged, so I didn't enter a quilt in the show. This year, I'm teaching for them in Denver (DNQF) and in Pennsylvania (PNQE), so I submitted this quilt to the show.<br />
<br />
I hope you are having a lovely winter. Or summer if you are in the Southern Hemisphere.<br />
<br />

<br />
Day 1/Destination Fairbanks:<br />
<br />
The Log Cabin Quilters of Anchorage and the Cabin Fever Quilters of Fairbanks invited me to come teach for them. I had a great trip, and I'm going to share some pictures.<br />
<br />
Alaska Airlines has a six and a half hour non-stop from Chicago to Anchorage. I will then fly another hour to Fairbanks. I loved the flight from ORD to ANC.<br />
<br />
First off, they had wifi, and it only cost $5 per flight, if you are flying to Alaska. I signed up and posted to Facebook. Then, I realized I could move towards the back of the plane and have my own row. I did that and when I started up the iPad again, there was no internet connection. The screen kept apologizing for not providing an internet connection and urged me to try again in a few minutes. It told me that the connection would not work if we were outside the US<br />
<br />
After about 15 minutes, I went to the back of the plane and asked a flight attendant if I had lost wifi because I moved too far back and was out of it's range. No, we were over Canada. And the service was only good over the US. I should have thought about that, the captain did say we were going over Canada. (A glance at the map would have clued me in...) The service, GoGo did send me a coupon for a free session in the future, I didn't use it on the way home.<br />
<br />
The one hour flight to Fairbanks rolled back from the gate on time, but then we sat there for a while. Then we rolled back to the gate and the captain announced that there was a maintenance issue with the plane and we were to debark and we could come back on when they had made the repair. On the way out, as part of my effort to be as cheerful as I can on a flight, I thanked the Captain for not flying us over the mountains in a broken plane. The captain said "We couldn't go anyway, the plane wouldn't start." Aha.<br />
<br />
I called Betsy in Fairbanks, to tell her I'd be at least 45 minutes late and we agreed that I would just call her when I landed, as she was so close to the airport. Not a problem.<br />
<br />
I called Brian to tell him that I was in Anchorage, and leaving eventually for Fairbanks. He thought the airport was probably very small, but I told him he was wrong indeed. And here are some of the pictures I took while at the Anchorage Airport.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One of the several souvenir stores in the terminal. I had a feeling I was going to see a lot of bad puns for business names.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A view out the window of the terminal. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6_sL7igBZzYVuE8bPoLFr0d2tx2oDtKOK_XS2_4vqBXpp-k9T50sT0tJ1tL3UYntdKg8DPH1pSjEUNsNCt5mx7ph5MD76JEdk-YsOj4-WYDQA76v0ZDufV160lexQppS3PT6CoCj9uyoO/s1600/IMG_0009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6_sL7igBZzYVuE8bPoLFr0d2tx2oDtKOK_XS2_4vqBXpp-k9T50sT0tJ1tL3UYntdKg8DPH1pSjEUNsNCt5mx7ph5MD76JEdk-YsOj4-WYDQA76v0ZDufV160lexQppS3PT6CoCj9uyoO/s320/IMG_0009.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There was a plane hanging from the ceiling at the gate. It's a Cessna 172, which is the most popular private plane. Or maybe the most popular single engine plane. One of those. I "flew" one for my 41st birthday on a discovery flight. The real captain had a second steering wheel and other controls. I loved it, but I am too short to be able to fly this airplane, I can't see over the dashboard and reach the pedals at the same time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Finally we flew to Fairbanks, in a very crowded plane, 737. The view outside was amazing. I didn't take pictures though. But the people around me were very generous sharing the information, telling me the names of the rivers we were flying over. </div>

<br />
The wall units are a combination of Ikea Stuva and Ikea Besta. The Besta units come in many more combinations than the Stuva, but the Besta doors were not what I was looking for. I discovered that the Stuva doors would fit on the Besta frames.<br />
<br />
So, below are three Besta 25 x 25 x 75" high frames. With three sets of Stuva doors.<br />
I could have saved some money buying wider Besta units, instead of three narrow units, but it was easier to get these home. (In my Prius) And I had to build them on my own, so the narrower units were doable. I used those furniture disks under the units to maneuver them in place and then I left the sliders under them.<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can see two more sets of Stuva doors, those are one two 25 x 25 x 25 units, I meant to buy shallower, but I bought those. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The purple boxes on top are from ikea too, Skubb. They come in purple, white, black, at least for now, in many different sizes. They are made out of fabric, and the bottom zips open or closed, so you can collapse them. I used the Circle die from Accuquilt, to cut out some circles to use as tags. Stray fabrics land in the containers, one has lamé, another has silk, one has scraps. </div>

I also have this amusing clock. It is not from Ikea. I ordered it from Pamela Allen, the designer.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Years ago, I bought two of these units. At ikea. Of course! They were meant to be shoe storage. And the green doors reverse to be blue. Depending on my mood, they can be bookshelves, storage for Accuquilt dies as they are here, printer stations. Etc. The did have short plastic legs, but without the legs, the unit fits under an old dining table. Ye olde dining table is cherry, it's gorgeous, and I got it at Carson Pirie Scott, as a clearance item. It's 36high, 40x72. And there is a leaf that I can't lift. You can't see the table in this picture, you'll have to trust me that it exists. You can see one leg of it here. I have covered it in multiple layers of ironing board cover fabric, felt and canvas, so I can iron on the whole table.</div>

This is from ikea too! From the kid's section. It was about $5. It's meant to hold a roll of paper, but I took a bolt of Wonder Under off the cardboard, rolled it up and I keep it on my worktable.</div>

<br />
I learned about this term during a lecture at the School of The Art Institute. Professor Yood was talking about Chicago artists and one of the characteristics of an artist from Chicago is often "horror vacui".<br />
If you look at the wiki article and then again at my quilt, my quilt seems almost empty in comparison.<br />
<br />
I don't really think I'm unstable, but I am enjoying adding more and more detail to this quilt top. I'm putting this image up now, which is a few weeks old, so that I don't wander upstairs and work on it and forget to come down and update the picture on my blog.<br />
<br />
I've decided that each section should have at least two details within each band. For example, see the purple triangles around the upper right circle? Those need to have another shape on them. And I'm going to put more circles on the curvy bands, one has turquoise curves on purple (Upper right corner), another is the turquoise against the orange. I have no clue how I will quilt it, I might even bead around each shape.<br />
<br />
I've been working on this quilt for at least a year, maybe two even. I'm taking it slow and enjoying it. These shapes are all fused, no turned edges for me!<br />
<br />

<br />
One of the voices, Samantha, sounds just like Siri. <a href="http://nextupdownloads.com/scansamples/samantha.wav" target="_blank">( Listen to "Samantha") </a><a href="http://gizmodo.com/5880443/listen-to-siri-sing-backup-for-the-flaming-lips" target="_blank">(listen to a really interesting use of Siri)</a><br />
<br />
I was playing with the commands. You press a button and say stuff, and the iMac does different things.<br />
I'd forgotten how much fun this is, and how it can be truly useful. In 1992, we got a MAC LC, and Josh and Sam were able to do all kinds of things with our computer, because the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talking_Moose" target="_blank">Talking Moose</a> would do many of the same things that VoiceOver could, if they needed help reading window contents. Plus it was highly entertaining.<br />
<br />
I used to ask the Moose to tell me a joke. He told terrible knock knock jokes. And so does Lion's Samantha. (My little Samantha, the bride to be, tells much better knock knock jokes.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_iJHV6gmGmcZ1I0om8tKdbgIB8_R1uOSx91ecrcjESjBdIjUz6j7OqHx-QMP7sikbcWBrBU7YsGEId6E-mKEGGfYR4hjUnAaAx3jG-sSPP2SVH5m91omK_3TImsOh1vkECpbpIsdrp4H-/s1600/IMG_0683.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_iJHV6gmGmcZ1I0om8tKdbgIB8_R1uOSx91ecrcjESjBdIjUz6j7OqHx-QMP7sikbcWBrBU7YsGEId6E-mKEGGfYR4hjUnAaAx3jG-sSPP2SVH5m91omK_3TImsOh1vkECpbpIsdrp4H-/s320/IMG_0683.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So, the other day, I had to drive from Evanston Illinois, up to Racine Wisconsin. I have built in GPS in my Prius and she understands verbal commands. I wanted to see the entire route. I couldn't figure out how to do it. She showed me all the Thai restaurants. Then the Golf courses. Then a few other things. She does "hide icons" on command, at least she understands that one thing.<br />
<br />
In frustration I said "Tell me a joke." That trigged the "help" command and she read me a list of common commands, one of which might have been "show entire route". Whatever it was, I remembered long enough to see the entire route. A half hour later, I couldn't remember, because driving in the rain, with half of your quilt stuff and wondering where to get goodies to get on the way to the quilt retreat does not go well with trying to remember weird bits of information. But I remembered "tell me a joke", which gets me to the help screen.<br />
<br />
The next day, on the way to the local quilt shop, I tried again because the route there was very windy but on the way home it was easier, so I wanted that easier route. But we were there by the time I got her to show me the entire route.<br />
<br />
Sometimes when I am alone in the car, I swear at her, and she goes to the next CD in the cd changer. "Next CD" also works.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I don't think the Prius does tell knock knock jokes. I really wish it did.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I think it won't be long before cars come with an optional mount for an Ipad, one that would also hide it. You'd pull up a screen... wait, I bet they already make that.Robbi Joy Eklowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10618336171629052780noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6479873024872674748.post-53538198295864834932012-03-18T11:58:00.001-05:002012-03-18T11:58:04.822-05:00A quick tour of my studioI have more of my studio organized, thanks to several trips to ikea and hardware stores.<br />
<br />
First, an ikea hack. I needed something to hold my flatscreen tv, my dvd player, stereo and satellite dish. The tv stand I had was too low. I didn't want to hang the tv on the wall, because I change my mind so often about where things are in my studio. So I built this "media" dresser out of a Malm three drawer dresser (less than $100), a Closetmaid stackable shelf, and pieces of hardware I had saved off of another table. You can buy new ones. The downside of this hack is that it won't hold my stereo, but I haven't figured out how I really want to hook it up anyway.<br />
<br />
Here's what I needed:<br />

So, I use a "working wall".<br />
<br />
Mine consists of three layers. The first layer is called Designer Tack. Bulletin boards made out of recycled paper. I bought mine at Menard's, which is a home improvement chain in the Midwest. They used to keep them in the cork bulletin board area, but lately I've found them in the wall panel section. Homosote is essentially the same thing, and comes in boards that are 4x8 feet. However, a full sheet is heavy, and doesn't fit in my Prius. But six of the Designer Tack boards fit in my car easily and individually, they aren't that heavy. I paid about $9 a few years ago, I saw them last week for about $13. They are 32x48 inches.<br />
<br />
Here's a link to the website for the manufacturer:<br />
<a href="http://www.americanpac.com/designertack.php" target="_blank">American Pacific Designer Tack</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFcUpKSa55jBSSOnIXqDonQJ1_VgNaxbigHbqM8qlO5F0430ffjvuIG5ZynUshgTEPzyMvexGCGgbilCPmmK1k32fj7Lk9FaSppl6YmKZHf0lYGYvKvF9ID7Lg0Un167QN4-ZMHvJjO7JR/s1600/designer-tack-label.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="88" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFcUpKSa55jBSSOnIXqDonQJ1_VgNaxbigHbqM8qlO5F0430ffjvuIG5ZynUshgTEPzyMvexGCGgbilCPmmK1k32fj7Lk9FaSppl6YmKZHf0lYGYvKvF9ID7Lg0Un167QN4-ZMHvJjO7JR/s320/designer-tack-label.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I used white batting on top of the bulletin boards. My last working wall had black felt, but this time around, I wanted white. The batting makes the surface feel softer, and also creates a whiter surface. At the very left of the wall, you can see about five inches that is somewhat grey. This is the bulletin board without the batting on top of it. I need to add the last strip. The batting I used is 45" wide, I had wrapped it around the right edge, so I ran out before I got to the left edge, using two full widths. I used P&B prepared for dyeing fabric, that is 108" wide. I used quilt pins to hold everything onto the sides, but at the top, I used pins. I haven't yet gone back to trim the top edge of the batting.<br />
<br />
This photo is of the wall before I pinned the fabric on the left side.<br />
<br />
So, here are the layers, going from left to right: <br />
1. Blue wall, newly painted by professional painters. It took me a week to be able to nail anything up on the perfect wall.<br />
<br />
2. Grey designer tack bulletin boards. Nailed into wall on corners, and in the center of each edge, using panel nails.<br />
<br />
3. White batting.<br />
<br />
4. 108" white prepared for dyeing fabric. (The fabric doesn't have to be PFD, I just have it already. Sometimes it's very hard to find wide enough fabric.)<br />

I'm very excited about it. It will be available in Mid December, you can order it now on the <a href="http://www.accuquilt.com/robbi-joy-eklow-complete-collection-for-go.html" target="_blank">Accuquilt</a> site.<br />
<br />
Here's what the die itself looks like:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a quilt that I made using my die, along with some strip cutting dies from Accuquilt. I used their palette, which is more Modern than my normal palette, but I like it! Hoffman of California supplied the fabric. When Accuquilt said I had to make a quilt, using my die, and working with a commercial fabric company, I said "I need batiks!" and they said "Use Hoffman!", I was very very very happy. I made enough flowers for two quilts, as I was going to Denver to tape a segment on The Quilt Show with Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson. My segment was not about the dies, but I wanted to bring my new die along, because by the time it airs, my die will be out. I still have the stuff to put together for the second quilt, but I think I may redo the flowers to match the picture above, with eight petals instead of just six, and use the color arrangement that they did. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made another quilt and have the pattern for it, but I haven't quilted it yet. I'm going to be doing that in the next week or so. It in a more vivid palette, out of my own hand dyes. I will be posting that, and the pattern will be for sale, I'm aiming for January.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A few people have asked me how I got involved with dies. I've been using fusible, specifically Wonder-Under paper backed fusible webbing, to make my quilts for about thirteen years. My current series involves multiples of the same shape, arranged in a radial symmetrical design. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is one of my quilts that required a good amount of cutting:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I designed this specific quilt for Pellon, the company that makes my beloved Wonder Under fusible. They have the quilt and the pattern is available for free on their website here: <a href="http://www.pellonideas.com/products/859-robbi-joy-eklow.aspx" target="_blank">Steampunk Sublime</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Personally, I love cutting out shapes, really, for me it's like hand appliqué, but with scissors. But sometimes, I want precise shapes, like those lime green circles. Or I want to do it faster, because those purple gears took a long time to cut. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was in Houston in November of 2010, for Quilt Festival, and I walked by the Accuquilt booth. I hadn't paid much attention to them, because I thought all the did was cut strips or shapes for people who piece. THEN I noticed they had dies for fusible appliqué. Lynda Pumphrey was there, a fellow quilter and I said "Lynda! I want dies of my shapes! Being able to die cut my shapes would be fabulous." So, I sent them a pattern I had designed and we went from there. And I'm hoping we'll keep going, I want to introduce more shapes in "my" vocabulary.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the meantime, you can start with my die, and add some other appliqué dies, like the Feathers, or Ribbons, and come up with some even more exciting quilts. I'll post a picture of the second quilt I made with my dies and some others in the next few days. And I dyed the fabric. And if you need it, I'll explain what I'm talking about with the dies and the dyes.</div>
